Dr. Gardiner and Dr. Stockdale developed TC-100 Insect medium in the mid-1970s by modifying Grace’s medium. The purpose of the modification was to enhance the production of Autographa californica NPV virions by cells from the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda. TC-100 Insect medium can support the growth of cells derived from various lepidopteran species, including Sf9, when supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS). This medium is primarily used for the production of baculoviruses in lepidopteran cell lines.
